The powerful imagery in The Nun and The Nun 2
*Spoilers for The Nun and The Nun 2. You have been warned!
“The Nun 2” came out September 8, 2023 and when I watched it, I saw a continued legacy of powerful, gothic and dark imagery to evoke fear and horror just as the first movie did in 2018. I love the visuals of this new movie. Maybe a little bit more than the first one. It has taken on an eerie atmosphere with every scene carefully shown to continue that feeling.
Watching “The Nun” was an experience. I personally thought the first half of the movie was a bit slow due to extensive world building. The last half however is amazing and filled with great imagery that excites and frightens.
The movie follows Father Burke and Sister Irene to an abbey in Romania to investigate a suicide of one of the Nuns there. Sister Irene is able to see visions that warn her of danger and malignant spirits which proves extremely useful. When they get to the abbey they find that there is an evil force that they need to cleanse before it escapes and endangers the surrounding village.
Some of the later scenes in “The Nun” are so well done. I loved the eerie and mysterious atmosphere that had me on the edge of my seat waiting for what would happen next. It was a fun watch.
One of the most memorable scenes in “The Nun” is when Maurice, also known as Frenchie, bursts into the room where Sister Irene is screaming and sees a group of women with bags on their faces dressed similarly to Sister Irene. He can hear the Sister calling him to help her, and he has to walk through these standing women, which creates a creepy and sinister atmosphere that will put you on edge. This scene is a testament to the movie’s ability to create an eerie atmosphere and use visuals to evoke fear and horror
The Nun 2 takes it one step further
I must admit that I prefer the sequel and I see it as far superior than the first. “The Nun 2” was filled with even better imagery by far than the first. It has authentic jump scares that are creative and had my heart racing. The beginning scene where the priest is thrown into the air and burst into flames is so abrupt, all I can say to the director is “well done”.
I absolutely loved it. Credit must be given to the actors and actresses of course. Jonas Bloquet did a fantastic job as Maurice. Especially in the second movie being “possessed” he gave a great performance. Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene was even better in the second movie. In the second movie we see Sister Irene’s character grow a little more confident and have more control of her visions. It helps big time to find out exactly the threat they face with the demon that possesses Maurice.
What’s next for The Nun?
The ending leads me to believe that there might be something more in the works as we see the Warrens from “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” are seen being contacted about some problem. I guess we’ll see where that takes us in their creepy universe.
I am looking forward to see how differently the Warrens will interact with this evil Nun in a third movie, which I would assume would be the last of “The Nun” film series. Even without a third I can say I am pretty satisfied with the 2 stellar movies we received and hope to see more great horror movies to come.
