Movie Review: Talk To Me
Good characters, good story, good execution.
*No major spoilers. Just brief synopsis.
Talk To Me was released July 27, 2023 and directed by Danny and Michael Philippou. It stars Ari McCarthy,Hamish Phillips,
Kit Erhart-Bruce, Sarah Brokensha and more. It has a run time of 1 hours and 35 minutes.
This movie is packaged extremely well. I felt like there was no filler and each scene was very meaningful for our understanding of the characters and story.
This movie goes through a group of Australian teenagers that have an embalmed hand. When the words “Talk to me” are said while holding the hand the person is able to see spirits. If the person says “I let you in” they allow the spirit to take control of their body.
Ridiculous right? Well these kids are Gen Z so they take turns getting possessed while the others record them for entertainment.
It gets pretty serious when Mia’s mom enters one of the boys while possessed and starts to speak directly to Mia.
Mia longs to speak to her mom again since her death 2 years prior. During the movie we will see her distant relationship with her father. It is quite obvious because she basically lives at her friends house. We don’t see her go “home” to her father until well into the movie.
This movie is a great supernatural horror film with powerful themes about loss, grief and pain.
The characters are not shallow. Their relationships are complex and authentic. We’re able to see how the friendships are strained when things go bad.
I enjoyed this movie a lot because of how well the themes were presented. I felt the story was well developed and the horror elements were solid.
A sequel to the movie has been officially confirmed so I’m excited to see where they go with the next one!
